3 Ways to Treat Piriformis Syndrome At Home

Posted on June 19, 2023

Piriformis syndrome is a condition characterized by pain and discomfort in the buttocks and can sometimes radiate down the leg. It occurs when the piriformis muscle, located in the buttocks, becomes tight or spasms, irritating the sciatic nerve. Here are some treatment options that can help alleviate piriformis syndrome:

1–Rest and activity modification: Avoid activities that worsen the symptoms, such as prolonged sitting, running, or climbing stairs. Take regular breaks and alternate between sitting and standing positions.

2–Cold and heat therapy: Apply ice packs or cold compresses to the affected area for 15-20 minutes several times a day during the acute phase (within the first 48-72 hours) to reduce inflammation. Afterward, you can use warm compresses or take warm baths to promote relaxation and improve blood circulation.

3–Stretching exercises: Gentle stretching exercises can help relieve tightness in the piriformis muscle. The following stretches can be beneficial:

If your symptoms persist or worsen despite conservative treatments, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional or a specialist like an orthopedic doctor, chiropractor near you or physiatrist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend further treatment options.

Chiropractic alleviates piriformis syndrome by realigning the pelvis and piriformis muscle. By addressing both the structure and the muscle, chiropractic often produces a permanent solution.
