Chiropractic Adjustment vs. Antibiotic For Ear Infections

During the months of December-February, recurring ear infections is one of the most common conditions that we see at Active Life Chiropractic in Charlotte.  When it comes to ear infections, pediatric chiropractors in Charlotte, like Dr. Bob Mason, serve as both a treatment and preventive options for ear infections.

To show how chiropractic care helps with ear infections, we have to look at the anatomy of the inner ear first. Ear infections occur when fluid has been trapped in the inner ear providing a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.  Normally, fluid drains by way of the Eustachian Tube, but with ear infections, this tube is unable to function properly.

The main reason that the Eustachian Tube does not function properly is from a spinal misalignment or a subluxation, in the upper cervical vertebrae. If the C1 vertebra, which is at the base of your skull, misaligns, it places pressure on the muscles that connect and control the Eustachian Tube thus altering it’s function.  Realigning the C1 vertebra, takes pressure off of the muscles that control the tube’s draining mechanism and allow it to open and drain the fluid.

So in many cases, Dr. Bob, a kids chiropractor in Charlotte, specifically addresses this problem with children of all ages.  Although he treats ear infections in newborns through teenagers, the most common age that we begin addressing this problem is in 1-2 year olds.  Several parents try chiropractic adjustments for their kids before ear tube surgery. Others find us after several failed ear tub surgeries. (4-5 year olds) Click here to learn more about our process.

Our Success Rate in 2018…

Our success rate in preventing ear tube surgery and hearing loss from ear infections is high.  Nearly 91/100 children eliminated ear infections completely in 2018 and the 5 that didn’t see a complete elimination saw a enough of a reduction that tubes were no longer necessary. Parents also noted that the severity was reduced and antibiotics were not needed.

Chiropractic Care Versus Antibiotics for Ear Infections

The biggest advantage of using chiropractic care instead of antibiotics is that chiropractic sets the body up to better fight off infections by strengthening the immune system.  The results are longer lasting than antibiotic use since antibiotics do not build immunity.  Unfortunately, many children we see have had multiple rounds of antibiotics and also need their gastrointestinal tract rebalanced over several weeks with probiotics supplementation.

How Long Does it Take?

If we can help, typically your child will need a series of adjustments to correct the problem. Each chiropractic adjustment gradually realigns the spine to normal. Because this process is gentle, it typically takes around 2 weeks to begin seeing results.
