Do You Have to Keep Going Back to a Chiropractor?

Posted on December 5, 2018

At Active Life Chiropractic, there are 2 ways that patients utilize care–symptom based care and wellness care. This article explains how often chiropractic care is utilized.

Symptom Based Care

The goal of symptom based care is to eliminate the root cause of an ailment.  The style that Dr. Bob uses is called corrective care and includes addressing the spine, muscles and nervous system to ease symptoms.  Similar to physical therapy, corrective care takes time and may require a series of treatments to correct the problem as much as possible.

For example, a patient might hurt their low back pain and need sciatica relief in Charlotte. Dr. Bob may discover that the patient needs spinal adjustments and home care instructions 2-3 times per week for a month.  In this case, the patient is returning to the chiropractor weekly but always has an estimated timeframe for relief.

Wellness Care

Wellness is used by patients to improve the function of their nervous system for both preventive reasons and/or as a first line of treatment for common conditions with efforts centered around avoiding medications and/or surgery.

For example, many patients will seek chiropractic care to keep a disc bulge from getting worse when they feel pain, or parents commonly seek pediatric chiropractors at the onset of ear infections. Both of these conditions almost always result in the need for prescription medications if left untreated, so it is common to try a less invasive approach such as wellness care.

What About the Cost?

Studies consistently show the cost-effectiveness of chiropractic care. Through symptom care’s approach of eliminating the pain’s source, a person can expect to not spend money on missed work or ongoing doctors visits months or years later.  The cost effectiveness of wellness care can be compared to preventative services on a house or car to avoid costly repairs down the road.
