How To Ease a Pinched Nerve

Posted on April 21, 2023

Pinched nerves can cause discomfort and pain, and there are a few things you can do to alleviate the symptoms before seeing a healthcare professional.

Rest: Avoid activities that aggravate the pinched nerve. Resting the affected area can help reduce inflammation and give the nerve time to heal.

Sitting upright at a desk or in a classroom tends to aggravate nerves in the hip area and can lead to sciatica, so try to avoid sitting for long periods of time.

Ice and Heat therapy: Apply ice or a cold compress to the affected area for 15-20 minutes, several times a day. This will help reduce swelling and inflammation. After a few days, switch to heat therapy, which will help improve blood flow to the affected area and promote healing.

Stretching and exercises: Gentle stretching and exercise can help relieve the pressure on the nerve and reduce pain. Try knee to chest followed by the piriformis stretch to help with sciatic nerve pain.

Massage: Massage therapy can help reduce muscle tension and improve blood flow to the affected area, which can help relieve the pressure on the nerve.

Professional treatment: In more severe cases, you may need to see a healthcare professional who can provide additional treatment options, such as physical therapy, chiropractic care, or medication.
