One of the Leading Causes of Back Pain that Might Surprise You

Posted on July 14, 2023

When someone develops back pain it is commonly related to a recent event (sitting in bleachers), trauma (a fall at home) or activity (hiking). And Even though all 3 of theses sources of back pain are common, the most common reason for back pain is past injuries.

The back is a complex structure comprised of bones, muscles, ligaments, and other tissues that work together to support the body and allow movement. Any injury, even a small one, to any of these components has the potential to lead to pain and discomfort. If you have pain that appears gradually and worsens over time, it is likely due to small repetitive injuries in the past.

Here are a few examples of how past injuries can cause back pain:

Muscle Strains: If you previously strained your back muscles through activities such as heavy lifting, sudden movements, or overexertion, the affected muscles may become weak or develop scar tissue. These changes can lead to chronic pain and make you more susceptible to future injuries.

Disc Herniation: A previous disc injury or herniation can result in ongoing or recurrent back pain. The intervertebral discs act as shock absorbers between the spinal vertebrae. When a disc becomes herniated, the inner gel-like material protrudes through the outer layer, potentially compressing nearby nerves and causing pain.

Postural Related Problems: These are most commonly linked to a desk job. Sitting in 1 position on daily basis limits the amount of muscle groups. Poor posture places excess strain on the muscles, ligaments, and other structures in the spine, which can lead to pain and discomfort.

Sprains and Ligament Tears: Injuries to the ligaments in the back, such as sprains or tears, can weaken the supporting structures of the spine. This instability may contribute to ongoing pain and increase the risk of further injuries.

It’s worth noting that while past injuries can cause or contribute to back pain, other factors such as poor posture, muscle imbalances, age-related degeneration, and certain medical conditions can also play a role. It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional such as a chiropractor nearby for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment of your back pain.
