Parent’s 4 Most Common Questions About Pediatric Chiropractors

Posted on February 11, 2019

FAQ pertaining to Kids and Chiropractic

In this blog post, I’m going to address some of the most common questions that I get asked from parents in regards to their child and chiropractic care.

#1 What happens during a pediatric chiropractic appointment?

So when you come to Active Life Chiropractic, Dr. Bob, a kids chiropractor in Charlotte, performs an exam consisting of neurological and a pediatric orthopedic tests. This exam is low invasive and is not uncomfortable because he is palpating and testing muscles, tendons, ligaments and vertebrae of the spine. It is common for babies to fall asleep during the exam.

#2 Why should my newborn see a kids chiropractor?

It is a good idea to get them checked just to make sure that their nervous system is functioning at a high level, even if your child doesn’t have symptoms right now.  The nervous system controls every function of a baby’s body including digestion, immune response to viruses and bacteria, hormone production, sleep patterns and development.  The 2 reasons that we see children are:

1—A spinal alignment places pressure on the nerves and negatively affects their ability to control the above processes and most commonly results in ear infections, constipation, colic, stiffness, uncomfortable mood, reflux or spit up to name a few.

2—Many parents have their child’s spine checked to make sure the nervous system is functioning properly for overall wellness.

#3 What causes spinal misalignments in a baby?

Though the birthing process is a miraculous and wonderful event and women’s bodies were made to do it, it still has hard effects on the baby.   Whether it’s from traveling through the birth canal, a cesarian birth, or trauma that comes from using a vacuum or forceps, the impact has major effects on a child’s spine. Even the smoothest births place strain upon a baby’s cervical spine.  Sometimes these effects cannot be noticed for months or years later.  The absence of symptoms does not correlate with the absence of health problems.  An alignment problem can alter the nervous system only to show symptoms years later at a time that is far removed from the birth process.

#4 Is Chiropractic care safe for babies?

Yes, chiropractic care is safe for babies. Chiropractors, especially those who are certified in pediatric chiropractor care, like Dr. Bob, are qualified to help your child.

These physicians have been thoroughly trained and tested on the anatomy and physiology of the human body, and they’ve had hundreds of hours in school plus post graduate courses through the international pediatric chiropractic association.

From a risk assessment, chiropractors in the US, have the lowest malpractice insurance rates among all primary health care providers.

The spinal adjustment process for newborns resembles a manual therapy on adults. (massage therapy)

Because their bones are still developing and they’re so soft, (cartilage instead of bone) Dr. Bob molds their spinal alignment instead of using a thrusting motion. Click Here to see a child chiropractic adjustment.

The amount of force to shift a baby’s spine into the proper alignment can be compared to using your index finger to test the ripeness of a tomato.
