Gastroesophageal reflux (GER), also known as acid reflux, is a common condition in babies where the contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus. It usually improves on its own as the baby grows, but there are some things you can do to help alleviate the symptoms:
Keep the baby upright: After feeding, keep your baby upright for at least 30 minutes.
Smaller, more frequent feedings: Try feeding your baby smaller amounts more frequently, which may help reduce the amount of milk that comes back up.
Burping: Burp your baby frequently during and after feedings.
Avoid overfeeding: Overfeeding can lead to reflux, so make sure to follow your baby’s hunger cues and don’t force them to finish a bottle.
Avoid tight clothing: Avoid tight clothing and diapers, which can put pressure on the baby’s stomach.
Elevate the head of the crib: Elevating the head of the crib slightly can help prevent reflux episodes during sleep.
If your baby’s reflux is severe, causes feeding difficulties, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting, poor weight gain, or breathing problems, it’s important to consult your pediatrician for further evaluation and treatment.
