What Causes Shoulder Blade Pain?

Posted on August 11, 2023

Pain in the shoulder blade area can have various causes, ranging from muscle strain to more serious underlying conditions. Here are the most common reasons for pain that is felt just off the spine near the shoulder blade.

Muscle Strain: Overuse or improper use of the muscles in the shoulder and upper back can lead to muscle strain, which can cause pain in the shoulder blade area. This might be due to activities like lifting heavy objects, poor posture, or sudden movements.

Rotator Cuff Issues: The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint. Inflammation or injury to the rotator cuff can result in pain that radiates to the shoulder blade.

Frozen Shoulder: Also known as adhesive capsulitis, this condition involves stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. It can cause pain in the shoulder blade area as well.

Poor Posture: Prolonged poor posture, such as slouching while sitting or standing, can strain the muscles around the shoulder blade area and lead to discomfort.

Pinched Nerve: A pinched nerve in the neck or upper back can cause referred pain that is felt in the shoulder blade region.

Herniated Disc: If a disc in the cervical spine (neck) herniates or bulges, it can put pressure on nerves that lead to shoulder blade pain.

Gallbladder Issues: Sometimes, pain from the gallbladder, such as gallstones or inflammation, can be felt in the shoulder blade area.

Heart Problems: In some cases, certain heart conditions like angina or heart attack can cause pain that is felt in the left shoulder or shoulder blade.

Lung Issues: Lung conditions like pleurisy or pneumonia can lead to pain that is perceived in the shoulder blade region.

Stress and Tension: Emotional stress and tension can cause muscles in the shoulder and upper back to tighten, leading to discomfort and pain.

Fractures or Trauma: Injuries to the shoulder blade itself or the surrounding areas can cause localized pain.

If you’re experiencing persistent or severe shoulder blade pain, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional. They can accurately diagnose the underlying cause of your pain and recommend appropriate treatment options based on your specific situation.
