Why Does Your Back “Give Out?”

Posted on July 19, 2023

The term “back going out” is often used to describe sudden and severe back pain or muscle spasms. It can occur due to various reasons, including:

  1. Muscle Strain: One of the most common causes is overexertion or straining the muscles in the back, which can happen during lifting heavy objects, sudden movements, or improper posture.
  2. Disc Problems: The intervertebral discs in the spine can experience wear and tear over time, leading to conditions such as herniated discs or bulging discs. If a disc impinges on a nerve, it can cause sharp pain and muscle spasms.
  3. Degenerative Conditions: Certain degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis or spinal stenosis can cause gradual changes in the spine, leading to increased vulnerability to back pain.
  4. Sciatica: Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs down the back of each leg, gets compressed or irritated. This can lead to intense pain that radiates from the lower back down the leg.
  5. Weak Core Muscles/Spinal Imbalances: A weak core can contribute to poor spinal stability, leading to back pain during certain movements or activities. Weak core muscles are often accompanied by spinal imbalances.(spinal misalignments) If a person’s spine or pelvis is rotated or shifted, it can lead to core muscle imbalances no matter how often the core muscles are exercised.

It’s essential to consult a healthcare professional or a qualified physician if you experience severe or recurring back pain. They can provide a proper diagnosis, recommend appropriate treatment, and offer advice on preventative measures to avoid further back problems. Additionally, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, practicing good posture, and using proper lifting techniques can help reduce the risk of back issues.
