Should You See a Chiropractor After an Auto Accident?

Posted on April 20, 2018

Whether you’ve been in a minor fender-bender or a major auto accident, your first calls will likely go to your insurance company and your lawyer. Your chiropractor should also be on that list, and here are four reasons why.

Peace of Mind

At the very least, post-accident chiropractic care provides peace of mind. Making an appointment with Active Life Chiropractic in Charlotte, receiving a full neck and back examination, and getting an “all clear” confirmation from our friendly, experienced chiropractors, allows you to breathe easy. And if we do detect a problem, you’ll feel good knowing that treatment is swiftly forthcoming.

Insurance

Speaking of “swift action”, receiving chiropractic treatment for neck or back pain immediately after your accident increases the chances of your treatment expenses being covered by the at-fault driver’s insurance. We recommend making an appointment with us within a few days of the accident. Waiting a few weeks or longer makes it easier for the insurance company to suggest that your injury is unrelated to the accident, and places more of a burden on you to get your claim approved and paid quickly.

Even Minor Crashes are Dangerous

Accident-related injuries aren’t restricted to incidents in which both drivers were travelling 60mph. This may come as a surprise to some, but minor crashes, even those occurring at speeds of 10mph, often lead to worse pain because victims ignore the possibility of injuries based on the “harmlessness” of the accident. Thus an appointment is not made with a chiropractor and a hidden injury is left to fester for weeks or months. When the side-effects finally manifest, you could be looking at multiple trips to a chiropractor because the injury will be harder to treat than if diagnosed earlier.

Injuries Don’t Always Appear Immediately

Probably the #1 reason why it’s important to be examined by a chiropractor right after a car accident is the fact that auto accident-related injuries don’t always appear immediately after a crash. Whiplash, the most common car accident-related injury, can take weeks to fully affect a person – and when the symptoms do appear, they might arise at the worst-possible time: at your job, working around the house, playing with your kids, etc. This is why it makes good health-related and financial sense to get an evaluation from a chiropractor soon after a car accident occurs.

Bear in mind that while automobile bumpers are designed to withstand damage at speeds up to 5mph, the human body is not. In fact, whiplash is proven to occur in car accidents in which the involved vehicles were moving at speeds of only 2.5mph.

What We Can Do for You

If you’ve been in a car accident, Active Life Chiropractic has the expertise to diagnose and treat back injuries, neck injuries, whiplash, and soft tissue injuries. We can also loosen stiff muscles and restore range of motion to your joints. Another potential symptom we’ll address is post-traumatic osteoarthritis, which is triggerable by an automobile accident and can accelerate an existing arthritic condition.
